Benitez comments on draw with Bologna
Bologna vs Inter Milan 0-0
The Nerazzurri only woke up during the final 15 minutes of a game that they also risked losing at the Stadio Dall'Ara, but they were unable to find a winning goal.
The result leaves them two points behind city rivals AC Milan, who thrashed Lecce 4-0 on Sunday to set the pace at the top of the table after the opening round of league matches.
Bologna dropped a bombshell on the eve of the match by sacking their coach Franco Colomba and replacing him for this game with Paolo Magnani, who was in charge of the club's youth team until less than 24 hours before kick-off.
Although Magnani is unlikely to keep the role on a permanent basis, he can be satisfied with his only match in Serie A.
His side started brightly and almost went ahead in the 14th minute when a defensive mix-up between Lucio and Julio Cesar, who were not on the same wavelength, saw the ball for Henry Gimenez, who lifted his shot over the crossbar from the edge of the area with an open goal to aim at.
Daniele Portanova should have done better with a free header from a corner in the 20th minute but he sent the ball straight at Julio Cesar from six yards out.
Gimenez missed the home side's next chance in the 41st minute when he shot wide after being found by Marco Di Vaio on the edge of the area.
Inter had lacked ideas in the first half and Benitez decided to hand Brazilian forward Coutinho his debut midway through the second half.
There was suddenly more life to the Nerazzurri's game and Wesley Sneijder forced an excellent save out of Emiliano Viviano from a direct free-kick in the 73rd minute.
The Italy international goalkeeper made a reflex save to deny Samuel Eto'o moments later as Inter raised the tempo in search of a winning goal.
Eto'o missed another excellent chance in the 76th minute when he delayed too long in a central position and Miguel Britos recovered to clear the last moment of danger for the Bologna defence.
It will be a disappointing result for Benitez, with the team having suffered a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on Friday.

Internazionale 0 - 2 Atlético Madrid
Benitez's side, the reigning European champions, were beaten 2-0 by Europa League winners Atletico Madrid, thanks to goals from Jose Antonio Reyes and Sergio Aguero, in the UEFA Super Cup.
By contrast Inter looked a shadow of the side taken to the pinnacle of Europe by Jose Mourinho - despite no less than 10 of the starting XI having also started the Champions League final.
In a tepid first half, this meeting between the creme de la creme of European football failed to live up to its billing as neither goalkeeper was forced to make a save.T
he playing surface at the Stade Louis II in Monaco is infamous for being hard and unpredictable - not helped by the subterranean car-park under the pitch - and that contributed to the poor quality.
Even so there was no excuse for some of the poor shooting displayed by Aguero in particular as Atletico edged the opening 45 minutes - the Argentinian did also have a decent penalty claim turned down.
Inter's best opportunity came from Wesley Sneijder, an effort from outside the box that bounced wide, before Samuel Eto'o drifted past a couple of challenges but pulled his shot past the post.
The second half was infinitely better and though the first save still did not arrive until the 58th minute, it was worth waiting for.
The goal sparked wild celebrations and Aguero nearly made it two but Cristian Chivu cleared off the line. Reyes picked up an injury while scoring and limped off to be replaced by another ex-Arsenal player, Fran Merida.
Diego Forlan brought two more saves out of Cesar, one from a direct free-kick and then from 30 yards out.Inter continued to struggle to create anything noteworthy and Aguero ended the contest with a simple finish after Simao had played a brilliant pass across the six-yard box.
To rub salt in the wound for Inter, even when Goran Pandev won a generous penalty in the final minute the Atletico keeper David de Gea had the last laugh by saving from Diego Milito.

UEFA SUPERCUP, Atletico Madrid vs Inter Milan 2-0
Atletico Madrid have defeated Inter Milan 2-0 in Montecarlo to win the 2010 UEFA Supercup with goals by Juan Antonio Reyes and Sergio Aguero.
Atletico goalkeeper David De Gea saved a Diego Milito penalty in the 89th minute.
Neither teams dominated the match, but Atletico's counter-attacks and maybe Inter's over-confidence made the difference.

Inter Milan (4-2-3-1) : J.Cesar - Maicon, Lucio, W.Samuel, Chivu - J.Zanetti, Cambiasso - D.Stankovic, Sneijder, Eto'o - D.Milito. Coach : R.Benitez.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, Lineup complete for group-stage draw
The lineup is complete for the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group stage and 32 clubs await the draw at 18.00CET on Thursday at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.
Former champions AFC Ajax, returning duo AJ Auxerre and FC København and group-stage newcomers MŠK Žilina and Tottenham Hotspur FC became the final five sides to earn their berths at the conclusion of the play-off round on Wednesday night, all celebrating victories at home. Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC, FC Basel 1893, FK Partizan, SC Braga and SV Werder Bremen had earlier won through in Tuesday's play-off second legs to join the 22 automatic entrants led by holders FC Internazionale Milano.
In all, 18 associations are represented and as well as Tottenham and Žilina, Braga, Hapoel, Bursaspor and FC Twente will be making their group-stage debuts. By contrast, Manchester United FC will be in the draw for a record 16th time out of a possible 19. Only 12 of last year's 32 contenders have qualified again.
Inter 3-1 Roma: Eto’o Brace Bags Benitez The Supercoppa Italiana
Inter added another another piece of silverware to their overflowing trophy cabinet by
ousting Roma to the Supercoppa Italiana.
John Arne Riise opened the scoring for the Lupi on 20 minutes, but Goran Pandev pounced on a defensive error to level the scoring before the break. Samuel Eto’o made the most of some tired Roma legs with 20 minutes left to play leaving Marco Cassetti for dead to tap home from close range. Eto’o double his lead late on following another defensive error to gift coach Rafael Benitez his first piece of silverware with the Nerazzurri.
The win, which was secured by some superior finishing in front of goal, means Inter take their 2010 trophy haul to four after lifting the Scudetto, Champions League and Coppa Italia at the end of last season.
The game sprung into life at a frightening pace and the Giallorossi squandered two golden chances in the opening 15 minutes when Mirko Vucinic and Jeremy Menez failed to fine the net following some excellent approach play.
Riise proved less wasteful in front of goal on 20 minutes when he powered a one touch finish into the bottom corner. The Norwegian had been served by a great through pass from Francesco Totti and the visitors deserved the early lead.
Douglas Maicon looked to be the form player for Inter but despite some commanding runs at the Roma box the Brazilian was unable to convert his numerous attempts at goal.
Pandev gifted the Nerazzurri parity on the stroke of half time as he pounced on some sloppy defending from Juan, to tap past his former foes. The scoreline was not an unfair reflection of the play on the whole, but the visitors left the field kicking themselves for the manner in which they had allowed Inter back into the game.
After the break Roma again came out firing and imposed Benitez’s side back as they pushed forward with Menez causing havoc in attack. Inter remained threatening on the counter and as the game neared the final half hour the home side took increasing risk in search of a winner.
Diego Milito thought he had put his side ahead on 64 minutes, but with the linesman incorrectly ruling Eto’o offside, ‘El Principe’s’ goal was not allowed to stand. The deadly partnership came together again just five minutes later however, and Eto’o wasted nothing as he tapped home from close range after bursting past his marker.
The Cameroonian hitman doubled his tally with ten minutes to go by pouncing on another Roma defensive error and smashing past a helpless Bogdan Lobont. The goal underlined the gap in physical power between the side’s and highlighted Inter’s killer difference in front of goal.
The result takes Inter’s Supercoppa haul to five and the Nerazzurri join rivals Milan as the most successful side in the history of the trophy. The defeat left Roma with little to show despite a positive approach to the game. As the ongoing rivalry between the sides continues, it seems the Nerazzurri are still the team to beat following another display of cup final ruthlessness.
INTER, Benitez:
Rafael Benitez took questions from the Italian and international media at the Grimaldi Forum today ahead of Friday evening's UEFA Super Cup against Atletico Madrid.
"I'm expecting a hard game against a very experienced opponent, but we want to win with all our strength," said the Inter coach. "Tactically, we have been working for a month and a half to play higher up the field to get our qualities closer to the goal. There are a few risks, but it's okay if we score three goals and concede one, like what happened in the game against Roma.
"If we are here, then I prefer to talk about the merits of the club and the players than rather than talk about heaven... We want to win, think one game at a time, and then we will talk about heaven.
"Atletico Madrid are a strong team, athletically able. They won't be an easy opponent. I have studied Atletico, it has always been a nice club. My father was an Atletico fan. I have always liked them, but I have studied everything about them to beat them tomorrow night.
"I am here to think about Atletico, not about other problems, like those of Liverpool. For those, you will have to ask Roy Hodgson. I know that there's Champions League draw today, but we're not thinking about that now. Whoever we get, we will think about them later on.
"The transfer market? I don't take care of transfers. Here at Inter I'm just the coach, not a manager. It's the chairman and the technical director Marco Branca who take care of this.
"How will my team play tomorrow night? Talking with the players we saw that we need time to experiment all the new things that we have studied. Now it's important to do well all the things that the team knows how to do, like what they did last season, and add a few new things.
"Our condition? We have am extra week in our legs, but a lot will depend on the football. We all have the chance to make history for the club and win a trophy that Inter have never won. It's a great opportunity for us."

"Chasing a fifth title" | |
Diego Milito spoke to Mediaset on the eve of Inter's departure for Monte Carlo.
This is what he had to say:
Diego Milito has travelled almost 35,000km since May. From Europe to South Africa, then South America and North America - you have clocked up more miles than any other Inter player. Are you tired?
"It's certainly not the best thing to do. I have travelled a lot lately and you can't always train at best, but the most important thing is that I am gradually reaching my form."
You have won four trophies and now you have the chance to add a fifth - a title that Inter have never won.
"It (the UEFA Super Cup) is a very important title and we are working hard to win it, because it's a title that Inter and many of us have never won."
You will go up against a player you know well: El Kun Aguero.
"Yes, there's him, Diego Forlan and other important players at Atletico, which is a great team. We will have to be very careful."
The Champions League draw takes place tomorrow. Are you curious to learn your opponents?
"Yes, of course, but the important thing is that we will be one of the top seeds. We will see what happens and how our luck goes."
And if you get Real Madrid?
"We will play the match, like we did against Barcelona last year. But you always hope to avoid a big team at the start."
In Monte Carlo you could win the award for best player in last year's Champions League.
"It would be nice but it would also be a victory for an extraordinary group. The personal awards are always nice but the recognition is for the whole team."
What would you give to repeat last season?
"A lot. It was an unforgettable and unique season. It will be hard to repeat, but we will try. We are working every day in search of perfection and we want to win more and more."
You had a good goal ruled out for offside in the Italian Super Cup.
"Yes, unfortunately. But it doesn't matter. I always say that the team's result at the end is the most important thing."
Has José Mourinho called you to congratulate you?
"No, I haven't spoken to him."
He says that coaching Inter is a dream. What do you think?
"Coaching Inter is a dream for anyone because it's a great club and a great team."

INTER, Moratti's new comments
In an interview with Italian television network RAI Uno, Inter Milan chairman and owner Massimo Moratti stated : "I am really plased with the fact that we won the Italian Supercup this past Saturday. It was the first trophy of the new season and I am happy for my players and for our new coach Rafael Benitez. Inter are on the path to hopefully repeat last season's success. Our next objective is winning the European Supercup against Atletico Madrid on Friday. .... Some people say Inter have too many foreign players ? I am not concerned with that and I am proud to have built a winning team which represents Italy abroad, regardless of my players' nationality. Besides, being successful and cosmopolitan is better than winning though corruption....".
Note : According to most Italian media sources, Moratti was referring to his longtime nemesis and former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi (who was involved in the "Calciopoli" scandal in 2006) when he made reference to corruption. The comment is already causing a stir in Italy.
