ESTORIL, Kompas.com - Juara dunia baru, Jorge Lorenzo menyempurnakan gelarnya dengan meraih gelar juara kedelapan di GP Portugal, Minggu.

Di sirkuit Estoril, pebalap Spanyol tersebut menunjukkan dominasinya dengan mengatasi rekan setimnya, Valentino Rossi.

Lorenzo melampaui Rossi saat lomba tersisa 11 lap dan masuk finis dengan terpaut 8.6 detik di depan pebalap asal Italia tersebut. Ini merupakan gelar juara ke tiga di Portugal dan yang pertama dalam dua bulan terakhir.

Pebalap asal Italia lainnya, Andrea Dovizioso dari Honda masuk finish di urutan tiga.

Musim balap 2010 akan berakhir di GP Valencia, pekan depan.

MONTPELLIER, KOMPAS.com - Petenis asal Perancis Gael Monfils meraih gelar juara di turnamen terbuka Perancis Selatan atau Open Sud de France di Montpellier, Minggu ((31/10/2010).

"Saya sangat bahagia..itu yang saya rasakan saat ini, karena bisa meraih gelar di negeri sendiri," ujarnya usai memenangkan pertandingan final melawan Ivan Ljubicic 3 set (6-2, 5-7, 6-1).

"Saya merasa berubah belakangan ini..mungkin lebih dewasa sehingga membawa perbaikan dalam permainan dan juga khususnya perilaku saya dalam pertandingan," tambah petenis yang meraih gelar kemenangan ketiga tahun ini.

Bagaimana taktik Anda dalam final ini? Anda terlihat sangat tenang namun bermain agresif. "Saya melakukan taktik kecil, yaitu tak lagi mengajukan pertanyaan pada diri sendiri apakah akan berhasil bila melakukan ini atau itu. Saya memilih langsung melakukannya dan melihat hasilnya. Untuk sementara teknik ini berjalan baik," ujar Gael menjawab Kompas.com.

Pemain yang berada di urutan 15 dunia ini menyatakan dirinya tak terlalu memikirkan soal urutan dunia. Baginya menjadi nomor 1 Perancis menggeser kedudukan Tsonga bukan tujuan utamanya untuk memenangkan suatu pertandingan. Yang terpenting bagi Gaël adalah bermain sebaik mungkin seperti saat dirinya melawan Ivan Ljubicic.

Ivan Ljubicic sendiri mengakui bahwa permainan Gael di final sangat bagus dan fisiknya prima. Ia juga memuji suasana pertandingan di Open Sud dan berniat bertanding kembali tahun depan.

Dalam Open Sud de France ini Gaël Monfils menggondol hadiah pertama berupa uang sebesar 103.900 euros, sementara juara kedua Ivan Ljubicic mendapatkan 54.800 euros. Namun keduanya mengaku seringkali tak sempat menikmati uang kemenangan mereka karena terlalu sibuk dengan latihan dan turnamen yang tiada henti.

'Tak apa sekarang saya bekerja keras dan mengumpulkan agar kelak bisa menikmati hari tua dengan santai," ujar Gael sambil mengedipkan mata.

Clijsters Juara WTA Championship

DOHA, Kompas.com - Petenis veteran Belgia, Kim Clijsters menjuarai WTA Championship setelah mengalahkan petenis peringkat satu dunia, Caroline Wozniacki di final, Minggu.

Clijsters yang baru saj pulih dari cedera bermain taktis untuk mengalahkan Wozniacki dalam tiga set 6-3 5-7 6-3. Clijsters yang pernah menjuarai ajang ini pada 2002 dan 2003 tampil dengan forehand yang keras.

Berkat pengalamannya, Clijsters mampu mendominasi permainan. Setelah merebut set pertama, Clijsters unggul 4-1, meski Wozniacki mampu menyamakan kedudukan 5-5 bahkan merebut game berikutnya dan menang 7-5.

Di set kedua, Wozniacki langsung tancap gas. Namun Clijsters mampu membalik keadaan dan unggul 5-2, sebelum menang 6-3.

Ini merupakan pertemuan pertama antara kedua pemain setelah Clijsters menyingkirkan Wozniacki di semifinal AS Terbuka, September lalu. Clijsters tampil mengejutkan mengingat ia baru saja pulih dari cedera.

Denmark take three, Yihan back in the groove

Jan Jorgensen claimed his maiden Super Series title when he defeated Indonesia’s former world and Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat in straight games as Denmark swept three of the five titles at stake at the Denmark Open Super Series in Odense.

Jorgensen’s 21-19, 21-19 victory also saw him move up to seventh in the Super Series Standings, and more importantly giving Denmark the possibility of seeing two representatives in the VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals.

The Finals, which offers a total prize money of USD500,000, is for the top eight ranked players/pairs based on the Super Series Standings. Each country is allowed a maximum of two players and pairs only.

“I have been dreaming about this since I was a little kid, so I am so proud and happy to be standing here now. And it feels amazing to win it here at my home event,” said Jorgensen towww.badmintondenmark.com

The win was all the sweeter as Peter Gade’s withdrawal from the tournament meant that the pressure was on Jorgensen to deliver the men’s singles title.

And Jorgensen rose to the occasion perfectly.

“Earlier, this year, when I was behind I had problems with my mental focus. But this tournament has been really good and it is the major factor why I won the title here at Denmark Open,” added the Dane.

For Taufik, the runner up spot moved him up from 15^th to ninth in the Super Series Standings and the Indonesian will be looking for another good result in this week’s YONEX French Open to boost his chances of qualifying for the Finals.

After the French Open, there are two more Super Series tournaments – the LI NING China Open and YONEX-SUNRISE Hong Kong Open.

Denmark also won the men’s doubles title via Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen who beat Indonesia’s Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan 21-13, 21-12.

The Danes, who finished runner up last year, were in total control as they never allowed Markis-Hendra to settle down.

“It’s wonderful. We are delighted. Last year we were the runner-ups and today we stepped up and won so it is a fantastic feeling,” said Boe to www.badmintondenmark.com.

Job One—Fix the Manny Hole. Since Manuel Aristides (Onelcida) Ramirez departed for La-La Land, we have not had a feared right-handed bat in the middle of the lineup. Period. Jason Bay was a nice approximation for a year and half, but he never instilled the kind of fear that Manny did in opposing pitchers. Solution: out-bid everybody for Jayson Werth.

Job Two—Fix The Bullpen. J.J. Putz and Jon Rauch are minimum additions that can be had on the free agent market. Add in Brian Fuentes from the left side and mix in Bard and Papelbon and fans can once again spell "relief".

Job Three—Get Adrian Gonzalez. The Red Sox need to consummate the long-rumored trade for left-handed first baseman of the Padres. If it means giving up some combination of Ellsbury, Dice-K, Casey Kelly and Josh Reddick—so be it. A-Gon is that good.

Job Four—Sign Miguel Olivo as the primary catcher. Re-sign Jason Varitek to a one-year deal and make him the back-up again.

Exciting finale on the cards in Odense

An all-China women’s singles final, an all-Japan women’s doubles final, an all-European mixed doubles final, and finally a Denmark-Indonesia final in the men’s singles and men’s doubles.

That sums up the line up for Sunday’s Denmark Open Super Series 2010 final day matches.

In the men’s singles, Denmark’s flag bearer Jan Jorgensen will square up against Taufik Hidayat while in the men’s doubles, defending champions Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen will take on reigning Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan.

Mogensen-Boe, who have not dropped a game en route to the final are in a buoyant mood, the Indonesians are also optimistic and all indicators point towards a great final.

“We are aiming for a win. We have been in many finals, so of course it is only the goal that really counts so we are aiming for that tomorrow,” said Boe towww.badmintondenmark.com after the pair’s 21-11, 21-16 win over Japan’s Yoshiteru Hirobe-Kenta Kazuno.

Markis-Hendra, on the other hand beat another Japanese pair Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hakiyawa 21-11, 21-9.

In the men’s singles, Taufik was stretched to three games in his 21-15, 17-21, 21-17 win over China’s Du Pengyu and a win over Jorgensen in the final will bring the Indonesian closer to a place in the season ending VICTOR BWF Super Series Finals.

The Finals, which will be played in Chinese Taipei on 5-9 January next year, is a tournament for the top eight players/pairs in the Super Series Standings.

Jorgensen, meanwhile, beat Hong Kong’s Hu Yun 21-12, 21-17.

In the women’s doubles, all-Japan final was assured after Russia’s Valeria Sorokina-Nina Vislova was beaten by top seeds Miyuki Maeda-Satoko Suetsuna 21-11, 21-9.

The Japanese will play Shizuka Matsuo-Mami Naito who benefited from Mizuki Fujii-Reika Kakiiwa’s withdrawal mid way through the third game at 11-5.

Fujii-Kakiiwa won the first game 24-22 but lost the second 19-21 and at one stage of the game the two pairs played an amazing 172 strokes before scoring a point.

In the women’s singles, Wang Yihan, the top seed will play compatriot Liu Xin in the final after beating Bulgaria’s Petya Nedelcheva 21-8, 21-10.

“It is a pity that I will not be playing Tine (Baun) in the final. However, I will still prepare my best to play in the final tomorrow,” said Yihan to www.badmintondenmark.com in reference to the No 2 seed’s loss in the last 16.

In the mixed doubles, England’s Nathan Robertson-Jenny Wallwork will take on former world champions Thomas Laybourn-Kamilla Rytter Juhl in the final.

Sox Favorties In A-Gon Sweeps

According to Don Norcross of "Sign On San Diego" (God knows what those Left Coasters mean about anything) the Red Sox are the front runners to land the services (via trade) of San Diego superstar Adrian Gonzalez. Norcross surmises that A-Gon would love to pepper the Monster with an "oppo" swing and (maybe more importantly) the scout who signed Gonzalez (Dave Finley) is in the Boston front office.
